Faith Academy's West Is A Softballer On The Field; Has A Creative Mind Off

The northwest corner of VYPE Austin's coverage area is home to Faith Academy of Marble Falls softball star and VYPE Austin Preseason Private School Softball Player of the Year Whytne West. The senior catcher won the poll with 12,585 of the 35,735 total votes.

"To see all my friends and families coming together to support me for something that is very important to me was very heartwarming and enjoyable," said West.

West is coming off back-to-back all-state honors, but wants to continue to leave a mark on her program.

"This year for me, I hope to grow even more as an athlete and continue the all-state streak," she said. "I plan to leave my fellow girls with the knowledge and skills to carry them into the following seasons to come."

As a soon-to-be graduate, West understands her role as a player and leader.

"Most of the girls are new to the team, so being able to lead them in practice [and] show them how enjoyable this sport really is," she said. "Being the catcher for Faith Academy also gives me the chance to lead them, since catchers are usually the ones that run the game. And, as a catcher, I am very vocal and loud. Every play, I also encourage my pitchers to let them know that they can do this [and]...Iet the players know that they did [something] right. As well as in errors, I like to let the girls know that it is okay, and I make sure that all my girls are settle[d] and have no nerves between innings."

West will keep herself busy with her upperclassman roles, but won't let them get in the way of enjoying her final high school softball season.

"For my senior year, the only goal I have is to grow closer with my girls," she said. "I really want to soak in my memories of my last year playing softball in high school."

West's love for softball is, of course, connected to her other interests.

"One reason I love softball is that the ball is yellow and my favorite color is yellow," she said. "It's such a positive color that makes everyone a little happier. I am also obsessed with pineapples, which is something that gives a positive vibe."

When West isn't around the game, her creativity keeps her busy.

"I love making things, like DIY," she said. "I tend to take random things and transform them into something else. For example, I have an outdoor fish fryer in my room that I transformed into a side table."
