Cypress Creek was a 17-6A playoff contender for most of last season, and will be in a similar position in 2018. The Cougars had a high-powered passing attack in 2017, but flew down the field too quickly to control the time of possession in games. Coach Greg McCaig wants running back Eddie Jimerson to lead an enhanced ground game in 2018, so his team can be in better positions to close out games. Once the team replaces 2017 quarterback Mateo Renteria with either Julian Brown or Carson Unruh, the offense should be electric again.
The eventual winner will be protected by center Tony Lopez, so receivers Geonardo Sutton, Dawson Unruh, Jaden Gray and Anthony Escobedo can be targeted downfield. The defense has a great leader in FBS recruit Josh White, so it can take its game to the next level. He’s joined by Keith Thomas and Treveyon Deboest in the linebacking crew. Also on defense are linemen Caleb Williams and Julian Coronado, as well as DB Arzeviur Richardson.
