ICYMI: Magnolia out-duels Willis, remains a top of District 20-5A

Magnolia went head to head with Willis at home on Tuesday with playoff implications heavy in tow.

With a back and forth, intense 73-68 overtime win, the Dogs stayed undefeated in district play and a top the 20-5A standings.

“These guys work so hard to beat a good team like that,” Moffatt said. “And to put ourselves in first in our district just makes it all worth it.”

Evan Palmquist had an impact with 18 points and seven assists. He was also fouled four times during the game.

Previous to Tuesday, both teams were undefeated in district with a (3-0) record. Magnolia hosted Willis at The Dog House with high energy.

Throughout the course of the four quarters and overtime, the teams were tied five different times.

Senior Andrew Lindvall had 10 points and some important shots for the Dogs in overtime.

Josh Larramendi had a good night with 11 points and multiple blocked shots.

“Willis is a fast playing team, 3-0 like we were,” Larramendi said. “They made us rise up to the challenge and play stronger together.”

Magnolia and Willis were tied, 57-57 in the fourth quarter, but Willis proceeded to hold the ball to run down the clock to try and slim the chances of Magnolia getting a shot.

They then turned the ball over to Magnolia who followed with a turnover and foul with 0.3 seconds left in the game. Willis however missed the free throw sending the game into overtime.

Magnolia’s student section helped with the energy going into overtime after a very back and fourth four quarters. Lindvall started off overtime with a three pointer and the Dogs were on from there.

“We had lots of energy going into overtime,” Palmquist said. “We proved to show that energy with a three pointer at the start of overtime and it carried us to a win over Willis.”

This season will be a battle until the end in a strong district.

Magnolia will travel to Brenham (0-4) on Friday night.
