DFW Hoops: These 5A boys basketball teams have the best shot at a UIL State title

Timberview is one of the state's best.

Yesterday, we ran through some of the contenders for the 6A ranks. Well what about 5A?

Many 5A teams in the DFW area are making a lot of noise as title contenders as a little more than a week remains in the regular reason.

Mansfield Timberview: Ranked No. 1 in MaxPreps and No. 3 in TABC, Timberview (19-2) started the season 17-0 and is making a charge for another deep run after getting to the regional quarterfinals last season.

The Colony: The Cougars made the playoffs last year and finished 26-11. They are following that up with a 21-4 start to the year and are ranked in the top 10 in state rankings.

Denton Braswell: Last year’s 5A runner up is 17-6 this year and will be battle tested once the playoffs start – in the same district at Little Elm, The Colony and Denton Braswell.

Lancaster: The state’s top-ranked 5A team sits at 17-2, which includes a Dallas ISD Invitational tournament championship, after finishing last year just short of winning the regional final against Midlothian and getting to the state tournament.

Grapevine: Despite being unranked, Grapevine is off to a great start at 20-5, which includes a runner-up showing at the Midlothian Heritage Hoopfest and a Consolation Championship at the Leroy Romines Tournament.

Other contenders: Little Elm (14-7), Mansfield Legacy (20-4), Northwest (17-6), Red Oak (19-5)

Tomorrow we’ll check out the top girls’ contenders for 6A and 5A.
