DIAMOND NOTES: Can Nimitz's programs claw way into playoffs?

CAN BOTH COUGAR PROGRAMS CLAW WAY INTO PLAYOFFS?

The Nimitz girls’ softball team reached the playoffs last year, extending their streak to eight straight postseasons. Can they make it nine?

New coach James Cammack is the leader of the den this season and welcomes back some talent in Katarina Fernandez, La’Tina Norris and Elizabeth Sims. Sims handles the catching duties, while Norris plays shortstop and Fernandez patrols the outfield.

“Our success depends on the play of our underclassmen and leadership from our seniors,” Cammack said. “We have been surprised by how well our two freshman starters Nikki Paz and Delana Temple have performed so far this season. Last year’s Newcomer of the Year Alyssa Cossio and junior Vincentia Sarpy have also become team leaders.”

With Paz in the circle, the Cougars are in good shape.

The Cougar baseball team just missed the playoffs last year with a 6-9 district record. Coach Kirk Thompson likes his chances to get in this spring as he returns some solid playmakers.

“It’s going to come down to pitching and defense, mixed in with good situational hitting and proper base-running,” he said.

Thompson and his crew reached the playoffs in 2015 and is senior-heavy this season. Keishaud Parker and David Saenz will anchor the pitching staff, while Leland Brown and Ruben Sanchez will shine on defense. Richard Baez will handle the catching duties, while Jaycob Quirit adds another arm.
