DIAMOND NOTES: MacArthur softball; baseball reign supreme in Aldine ISD

Big Mac baseball looking for district title

Go Big Red.

The MacArthur Generals’ softball and baseball teams reign supreme in Aldine ISD. The softball team made school history, going 25-6 last season, while the boys of spring finished second in district behind solid pitching and hitting.

We should see much of the same from these two programs.

So, what will they do for an encore?

BIG MAC IS BACK...

Ladies first. The Generals (25-6) made school history last season reaching the regional semis under the direction of coach Leechelle Lara. The Gens fell to Oak Ridge, but the scary thing for Houston-area softball teams is that eight starters return. First-team, all-district selection Angel Morales (UH-commit) returns along with Newcomer of the Year Wyllo Gayle.

“We have to give 100-percent effort day in and day out,” Lara said. “Our keys are determination, grit, drive and unity.”

Also pitching in will be Desiree Castillo and Lizabeth Munoz, who are both signed to Laredo Community College. Illyana Camacho will also play a key role.

The MacArthur baseball team is led by the dean of Aldine ISD coaches. Ernest Gonzales has been the head coach for 27 years and had 346 wins entering the season. The Generals are a lock for another playoff spot as they are loaded with returning studs.

Back in the dugout are first-team, all-district recipients Isaia Capelo (third-base), Paul Garcia (second-base), Rodney Pitts (outfield), Chris Garcia (shortstop) and Armando Ordenana (outfield). Capelo and both Garcias share pitching duties. Joseph Gusman is a junior, who will also patrol the outfield and toe the rubber.
