What is in the water inside the bubble of The Woodlands?
The Highlanders are a national power with 21 state titles in cross- country under the direction of Juris Green.
But how about what coach Tom Earles has cooking at The Woodlands Christian Academy? The Warriors swept the boys and girls TAPPS Class 4A state titles again in November, defending their 2017 championships.
“It’s a good running community,” Earle said. “The parents are runners and really support the cross-country programs. That includes us and The Woodlands. What’s pretty cool is that we share workout plans and facilities. We interface a lot. It just makes everyone better.”
Earle has built TWCA’s program from the ground up dating back to 2009, which started with three runners. Now the Warriors carry 27 harriers as a team.
“It never crossed my mind that we would be hanging banners for state titles,” he said. “To see the teams have so much success is really rewarding. We are picking up multi-sport athletes like swimmers and soccer players, who want to compete with us. Everyone wants to be a part of a winner.”
The girls team has four titles in the trophy case, while the boys have two under their belt.
The girls’ cross-country team was led by Ellie Catron’s performance. Catron was the individual top girl runner, finishing with a time of 12 minutes and 35.7 seconds. Teammate Lindsey Worthington finished second overall.
Emily Jasek finished fourth (13:44), Isabella Krantzcke took ninth (14:09.5) and Fern Shirley came in 10th (14:13.8).
Here’s the crazy part, they all return next season.
On the boys’ side, TWCA was led by Josh Mueck, who finished second overall with a time of 17:29.7. Along with Mueck, TWCA had three of the top five times posted - Josh Shearer came in third (17:43.6) and Ben Shearer followed in fourth (17:56.9).
“It’s still sinking in, but it’s really exciting for our program,” he said. “What’s great is that it sets up really well for us next year.”
Don’t call it a dynasty yet, but they are flirting with the “D” word.
