Three years ago, the Galena Park boys soccer team finished the season without a single district win.
Jorge Abarca and Carlos Quinones were freshmen that season. Flash forward to the 2018-2019 season, the Yellowjackets have gone 42-16-4 with two playoff appearances and the senior captain duo of Abarca and Quinones have combined for 60 goals and 45 assists.
Quinones has racked up awards in his four seasons including three first-team, all-district selections, two TASCO All-Region team selections and even a District 23-5A MVP award.
Galena Park head coach Chad Monk calls Quinones, “one of the most impactful players I have gotten to coach.”
Abarca also has filled his personal awards shelf to include two all-state selections, a District Newcomer of the Year award and two first-team, all-district selections. In the 2017-2018 season, Abarca scored 27 goals and had 11 assists which led to his first-team, all-state forward selection.
Both Abarca and Quinones plan to attend college and play at the next level.
The Yellowjackets are currently 8-4-2 this season and sit a game back from first place in the district. Galena Park takes on Lee High School tonight at Dement Field. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
