After 10 consecutive years at the TAPPS State Golf Tournament, the Second Baptist men’s golf team was able to bring home the TAPPS 5A title for the first time ever.
Led by head coach Johnnie Butterfield, Second Baptist scored a two-round total of 625 (308-317) to edge Midland Christian by nine shots. Midland Christian was the 2017 champion, beating Second Baptist by only five shots.
The Eagles also saw Travis Vick become the individual champion, shooting a 136 total over two rounds. Vick’s second round 66 vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard by only one stroke for the win.
This was the junior’s second-straight 5A golf title. Vick finished in second place his freshman year. He was also named the Southern Texas PGA Junior of the Year in 2016 and is one of the highest ranked amateurs in the country.
The 2018 championship could be just the beginning for the Eagles.
Though senior Chris Hannon is graduating, South Regional Champion Donovan Dastmalchian (161), Sam Oelfke (160), Richard Callaway (168), Tyler Holt and Travis Vick are all returning in 2018-2019.
