Every sport has one. Football has the quarterback; Basketball the point guard; Baseball the catcher.
For Ennis Lions goal keeper Sarah Bell, that is how she sees herself when she steps onto the pitch.
“When I’m on the field during a game, I’m always keeping an eye on my team to make sure they are in the right position,” Bell said. “As a goalie, I’m the eyes of the field. I can always see what needs to be fixed, and communicated that to my teammates.”
Bell has been on the Ennis girls varsity soccer squad since she was a freshman. She’s started every game, was awarded Academic All-District her first two seasons and as a sophomore was named the District 17-5A Keeper of the Year.
That’s just on the field. Off the field, Bell is even more impressive.
The junior currently holds a 4.0 GPA and is ranked 5th out of 500 students at Ennis. Safe to say Bell knows what’s what on and off the pitch.
Good thing, because as a goalie, Bell often is the last line of defense between the opponents and a goal.
“I’m aggressive and fearless,” Bell said of her position. “Whether it’s a one-on-one situation, a corner kick, or a PK, I’m always trying to put myself in the best position to help my team as best I can.”
As a leader of the Lady Lions, Bell takes pride in being able to observe the game, provide insight and give constructive criticism for her teammates.
“One of the most important things I try to get across to my team is to give 100% at all times,” Bell said. “It doesn’t matter the score. If you let your effort down, the rest of the team will let down as well. We always have to work hard together as a team to reach our goal.”
As for goals, Bell has a good idea of what she hopes to accomplish in the 2019 season.
“I’ve been really focusing on my knowledge of the game,” she said. “And I’m striving to earn an All-State selection this year.”
For the Lions as a whole, Bell and the team have one main obstacle they want to hurdle: Make it to at least the second round of the playoffs.
Ennis has made the playoffs the last two years, but in both seasons, they fell to College Station in Round 1 of the 5A bracket. Bell has every intention of breaking that trend in 2019.
Bell also plays club soccer in the National Premier League for Solar FC under Darrin Hedges.
Outside of soccer, Bell said her family, faith and my grades are the important things to her.
“Without these things and the support of my amazing family and all of my coaches, I could not enjoy or succeed in the game as much as I do,” she said.
A leader in the goal and in the classroom, big things lay ahead for Sarah Bell.
And you can be sure she’ll attack them just as she would a shot coming at her — by giving 100% in everything she does.
