The Legend of Bo: Magnolia's Willis discusses choice between baseball and football

When you think of the ideal “student- athlete,” you think Bo Willis.

Willis sets the standards high in Magnolia, being one of the most recognized dual-sport athletes in the State of Texas.

The senior star shows out both on the football and baseball field. An all-state football selection his sophomore year, Willis took competition and grit to a whole other level.

“You never get half speed out of Bo,” Magnolia football coach Sterling Doty said.

After the fall football season his junior year, though, Willis decided to hang up his pads and cleats in exchange for a bat and glove.

“I love being the guy on the field that everyone knew played two sports, and realized how hard it is to keep it up even without injury,” Willis said. “Having to leave football behind was one of the hardest decisions of my life.”

The decision to walk away from football directly correlated with his commitment to play Division I baseball at Texas Tech University. He announced his commitment via Twitter in February 2017.

“The most important thing is that no matter what level I end up playing at, I want people to remember me not necessarily as a great player but is a great person to play with,” Willis said.

Magnolia baseball is looking forward to a successful season with Willis on the roster. As a starter for the varsity squad, Willis is known for his powerful bat and strong arm from behind the plate.

“Bo brings leadership and experience to the program this year,” Magnolia baseball coach Taylor Shiflett said. “He is a wonderful individual to be around and very positive.”

“He works extremely hard at his craft,” junior pitcher Joey Raker added. “He is a great teammate and leader on the field, and a great friend off the field.”

Aside from the sports, Willis is just like any other teen. In his downtime he enjoys going to church, watching movies and spending time with his friends and family.

No matter what level Bo Willis takes his sports career to, we know one thing for sure; Magnolia will be watching.
