Vikings Victory: Marlee Zein wins state joining family legacy at FB Dulles

Keeping a family legacy alive is just the tip of the iceberg of now state champion Marlee Zein.

Claiming the 6A Girls Singles Title makes her the second Zein to do so at Fort Bend Dulles. Her sister Mariam, now at Rutgers, accomplished the same feat in 2012.

It’s safe to say the skill runs in the family.

“Very proud, we’re all very proud of her,” Fort Bend Dulles coach Patty Priddy said. “She’s worked very hard for a very long time. You don’t get the ratings she does without doing that.”

The journey was a special one, Zein said as she felt the support of her school and has now achieved a truly elite status.

“Personally, I think it’s really cool,” Zein said. “It represents my school. There were a lot of people were cheering for me back home and that makes this that much more important.”

After finishing as a state runner-up in her freshman campaign, Zein walked away from high school tennis for her sophomore and junior seasons. But with one final season of high school eligibility left, Zein decided to return to the UIL circuit to try to go out on top.

“My coach really wanted me to play my sophomore and junior years. But I was busy with outside of school tennis,” Zein said. “My senior year was just an end game and I thought it’d be really cool to go out a state champion.”

Zein will continue her career at the University of Florida.
