It's time for some "Big-Boy" Texas football this weekend. It's Regional Final weekend as teams can feel the state championship trophy on the tip of the fingers. Everyone is banged up. Everyone is tired. This has been a ride that has begun over three months ago.
The Metroplex has some elite matchups, as usual.
VYPE breaks down a few and offers its' fearless predictions.
Southlake Carroll vs Duncanville (Saturday at 4:30, The Star in Frisco)
Why does it seem that people are sleeping on Southlake Carroll? Everyone is talking about North Shore, Allen, Judson and Travis. Where is the Dragon love? Coach Riley Dodge has the offense humming. shocking, right? They whacked Euless Trinity last weekend and QB Will Bowers is lighting up defenses with over 2,300 yards. TJ McDaniel (SMU) has huge holes to run through and has accumulated 2,000 yards on the ground. Some say it’s system, system, system. It might be, but the Dragons are cruising.
Arlington Lamar was a bump in the road for Duncanville, who has one of the stingiest defenses in the state. So, what we have here is a first-year offensive coach against one of the top coaches in the state in Reginald Samples. Hmmm, great matchup. Duncanville is undefeated also, but does it on defense. They can't get behind early in this one.
PREDICTION: Duncanville is going to flex of defense and win a tight one.
Aledo vs Reedy (Saturday at 4, Northwest ISD Stadium)
Ok folks, this could be interesting. Both teams are a combined 36-0. Aledo is the gold standard with seven state titles. Yes, seven. They have a blue print to success and it’s winning on the ground.
What about Reedy? The Lions are balanced on offense and huge on both sides of the ball. They QB is a crafty senior in Josh Foskey. It’s going to come down to a battle of attrition. Can Reedy’s defense stay fresh enough to take the onslaught of Jase McClellan? He’s going to be fed the rock over 25 times. Aledo isn’t trying to trick anyone, but can you stop them?
PREDICTION: When you play a team like Aledo, it’s about the mystique. That’s honestly worth 10 points. Aledo advances.
Allen vs Midway (Saturday at 2, McLane Stadium, Waco)
The Midway Panthers have a huge uphill climb this Saturday at McLane Stadium on the campus of Baylor University this weekend. No. 1 Allen took down The Woodlands in a close one, while Midway had to come from behind to beat Klein Oak in a 28-27 win. Come from behind? They were down 24-0 at the half.
Allen was in a battle with the Highlanders deep into the fourth quarter before pulling away 31-24. Ole Miss-commit Grant Tisdale runs the Eagle offense and Theo Wease is a game-changer at WR. The 6-foot-3 OU-commit has to be accounted for at all times. Grant Robinson is a steady back, who is great between the tackles. On defense, KJ Willie makes plays
PREDICTION: Allen’s offense explodes in Waco; wins by 17
Highland Park vs Tyler (Saturday at 1, The Star in Frisco)
HP is undefeated, loaded and ready to fit the state rings for 2018. QB Chandler Morris is just a junior with offers from some big-time schools ranging from Clemson and Arkansas to Auburn and Oklahoma. Enough said, right? Benner Page is the answer at RB and the defense is legit.
Tyler has had a nice season and great playoff run. QB Devien Woods leads the way with over 2,100 passing yards, while RB Roderick Hawkins carried the load in the backfield (1,270 yards).
PREDICTION: Highland Park is going to run rough-shot in a lopsided affair.
Birdville vs Ryan (Saturday at 8, The Star in Frisco)
Denton Ryan doing Denton Ryan things as they advance to the state semis.
