VYPE Q&A: Cy Creek Softball Freshman Talks UH Commitment & Fast HS Start

If Spring 2018 says anything about the future of Cypress Creek athletics, it should be a bright one. The Class of 2021 led the girls basketball program to its first-ever state final four, and has created stars like softball's Ja'Naiya Thomas. VYPE's Thomas Bingham caught up with the infielder to talk about her early high school success, why she committed to the University of Houston as an eighth grader, and what she plans to accomplish before she graduates.

VYPE: You have a .545 batting average, 42 hits, 24 RBIs, 35 runs and four home runs through the first 23 games of your freshman season. With stats like that, you didn’t just pick up a bat. How long have you been playing softball?

JT: "I started at the YMCA when I was seven. At first it was just fun, but then I started getting better. I was like, 'I could really do something with this, get a scholarship, [and] play something I love'."

*VYPE: *You’re a freshman committed to a Division I program. How early did colleges reach out to you about playing at the next level?

JT: "At the end of seventh grade, [UH] pretty much told me, 'we like the competitiveness, we like the way you play, and we want you here'."

VYPE: Why was the program right for you, not only to commit as early as you did, but also to continue your playing career there after high school?

JT: "UH was my dream school. It's where I wanted to go since I was really small. So once they gave me that offer, I was like, 'I'll take it'."

VYPE: You have three more years at Cy Creek. What are your goals before graduation?

JT: "I [would] like to go to playoffs [and] state with my team, bond with them, and be a good role model and teammate to everybody."
