VYPE Q&A: Friendswood volleyball's Tori Weatherley

Who: Tori Weatherly, Friendswood, Junior

What: Won the VYPE Replay Bay Area Volleyball Player of the Year Poll

2018 Stats: 1,298 assists, 313 digs, 23 blocks, 38 aces, 67 kills

VYPE: How long have you been playing volleyball and how did you get your start?

I’ve been playing volleyball since I was 11 years old. It all started when my friend took me to a Friendswood playoff game, where they had a 5 set thrilling win to get to State. From that moment I was hooked. I’ve made a goal for myself to do the same.

VYPE: What is your favorite part about playing volleyball?

I am a bit of a control freak, so my favorite part about volleyball is being able to control the offense. No matter what is happening outside of volleyball, that is one thing I can control. It also builds my leadership skills both on and off the court.

VYPE: In your opinion, what's the most important skill set for a setter?

In my opinion, the most important skill for a setter to possess is court awareness. A setter must be able to make decisions based on where the pass is and where the block is set up in a split second. You also have to be very athletic because you end up having to sprint and set from a lot of different angles.

VYPE: What's your pre-game routine? Favorite Pre-game meal?

First, I turn my music on. Whether it is with headphones or a big speaker, pre-game music is a must. After that, I stretch and get my hands warm. As a team, we usually have some sort of dance circle to get us hyped and keep us warm.

For school, we get Chick-fil-a catered to us for our pre-game meal. For club, I get to eat my dad’s famous peanut butter and brown sugar sandwich. If you have never tried one, I highly recommend it.

VYPE: Favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school is math for sure. I am two years ahead, taking AP calculus as a junior. Math is something I am passionate about, and has always clicked for me.

VYPE: Who is the best "hype-woman" on Friendswood? Who's the best dancer?

For me, the best “hype- women” on my team is my middle, Makensy Manbeck. We have played together for 3 years now, on the same club and school team. I can always count on her to pump me up before a game, and in the game, our connection in offense creates energy for us both to feed off of.

The best dancer on my team is Haley Hubbard. She knows the right dance moves to get everyone else moving.

VYPE: Off the court, what's your favorite thing to do?

Off the court, I am usually at a park in Friendswood playing beach volleyball. If I have to choose something besides volleyball, you can find me, my three brothers, and my dad in a super intense game of street hockey or pool basketball. My family is definitely the reason I am so competitive.

VYPE: You play for AVA during club season; What's the biggest difference between HS and club ball?

The biggest difference between HS and club volleyball is the level of competition. At my club tournaments, the game is played at a faster pace, and every time you step on the court it is going to be a competitive match. I love club ball, but there is something special about getting to play and represent your school. In high school, your season can end in an instant, but in club you seem to always have another tournament.

VYPE: If you could go pro in any sport besides volleyball, what would it be?

If I could go pro in any sport besides volleyball, I would choose gymnastics. I did gymnastics for about 10 years competitively. To this day, I get my team hyped by doing back handsprings pre-game, and sometimes an occasional pep rally.

VYPE: What is one moment from your volleyball career so far that you'll remember forever?

Last year in club, on 16 Rox, we played in Chicago at a National Qualifier. We ended up getting 3rd and earned a bid for Detroit. During one match, we won a set 39-37. It was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever played. Each point was so critical, and I love being put in pressure situations where everything is on the line.
