Youth movement is key to Aldine's success

The 'Stangs are young and ready

How about this for a history lesson?

The Aldine Mustangs last won the UIL baseball state title in 1970 – 49 years ago. The ‘Stangs have been in a bit of a draught, fighting to get back in the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

Can coach Leonard Toups push the right buttons to get back in the playoff conversation?

His son Johnny Toups was a first-teamer as a freshman last year and returns to the middle infield. The ace is first-teamer Adrian Martinez and his battery-mate Allen Gutierrez also earned a first-team nod. Sophomores Cristian Gutierrez (2nd-team, all-district) and Danny Gonzalez give Aldine hope for the future. Mark Lopez and Jonathan Lomas are also important contributors.

The Lady Mustangs haven’t been in the postseason for five years, but coach Becky Short has high expectations for this year’s softball installment.

“The key for us is to just throw strikes and let our defense work,” she said. “We have to make the routine plays to be competitive.”

The headliners for the ‘Stangs include Monica Silva, Stephanie Gonzalez, Madison Machado, Aliyah Santos, Joanna Fortanela and Samantha Castillo. They look to get in the district win-column several times this season.
