Senior captain Cameron Watson just completed his fourth and final year running for Second Baptist’s varsity cross country team.
Watson made the varsity team his freshman year, ran for varsity again his sophomore year, and served as team captain both his junior and senior year.
“[Being captain] has been cool to do because I really enjoyed the captains I had as a freshman and sophomore,” Watson said. “I was excited to get to be the team captain for two years.”
With a personal record of 17:36, Watson was the individual district champion his sophomore and junior year, leading the men’s team to win a district championship in 2017.
Watson started running in the seventh grade because of encouragement from his dad. Once he started, he realized it was something he loved and was good at.
Watson’s humility is apparent to all, however.
After he won his individual district title, Watson was more concerned for his teammates and their finish than he was for himself, according to his own account.
“Cameron always shows up to practice ready to work and has been a great leader on the team since freshman year,” junior teammate Caroline Torn added. “He and his encouraging personality will be extremely missed next year.”
Watson is a legacy for the Second Baptist Cross Country program and a leader whose presence will be missed tremendously in the years to follow.
