Former Katy RB Josh Oglesby to hang up cleats, focus on track for Arkansas

When you are a two-sport athlete, sometimes you have to make difficult career choices.

Katy alum Josh Oglesby recently had to go through that process.

Oglesby committed to play football at Texas A&M Kingsville, but after one year with the Javelinas, the former Tiger decided to hang up his cleats and focus on track.

Last Friday, Oglesby signed a full-ride scholarship to run track for the University of Arkansas.

“After I finished 3rd in the state in the 100 without much track training it was something that was always on my mind,” Oglesby said. “I wondered how good I could really be with proper training.”

In his senior year at Katy, Oglesby ran the ball 90 times for 624 yards at 10 touchdowns. He was recruited by BYU and Montana State, but ultimately signed with A&M Kingsville.

He played in four games for the Javelinas, running the ball for just over 100 yards on 29 carries.

Now, it’s all about the oval.

“I plan on running the 60 [meters], 100, 200 and the 4x100,” Oglesby said.

The 5-foot-7 athlete had interest from several schools to run track, but when he visited Arkansas, he knew it was the right place for him.

“The facilities are state-of-the-art,” he said. “The family atmosphere was great and I feel like Arkansas has the best resources for me to better myself in the class room and on the track.”

Arkansas is coming off an outdoor season where the Razorbacks finished 12th at the national championships. Earlier in the season, Arkansas finished 13th in the indoor championships.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing how fast I can get, and potentially running for the USA,” Oglesby added.

As far as football goes, Oglesby will miss the team aspect of the game, but he’s ready to focus is efforts on becoming the best track athlete he can.

And if you know Josh as well as we do, you know he’ll be making impact sooner rather than later.
