MISSOURI CITY – The Hightower Hurricanes are locked into the second playoff seed in District 24-5A and loaded with confidence after an easy 81-50 win over Willowridge Friday night.
The Shadow Creek Sharks (14-1) own the district’s top seed and can’t be caught with one game left on the regular season schedule.
Hightower has a Tuesday date with Manvel to end the season, but no one will be able to leapfrog the ‘Canes, either. They are locked into the second seed, regardless of the outcome of their game vs. the Mavericks, and will most likely face Houston Sterling in their first post-season matchup.
Four senior Hurricanes playing their final home game – Kevin McGaskey, Jewuan Cade, Trevion Joseph and Marius Stevens – were in the starting lineup and thrilled the crowd when they raced to an 8-3 lead four minutes into the contest, with the seniors accounting for all the points.
Willowridge got within 12-11 on a put-back basket by Latrell Moore that he released an instant before the first quarter buzzer, and the Eagles tied it at 13 less than two minutes into the second.
Chris Harris and Kristopher O’Neal, with a barrage of steals, fast-break buckets and three-pointers, did most of the damage as Hightower capped off a 17-5 flurry in the second quarter and were never seriously challenged thereafter. The Hurricanes’ edge was 36-24 at halftime, and they stretched it out throughout the third and fourth quarters.
Hightower has reached the state 5A semi-finals three times in its history, and each time was eliminated by the eventual state champion. Most recently in 2011, Lewisville Marcus sent the ‘Canes packing with a 53-41 defeat and the Marauders won it all. Desoto did the same in 2003, and in 2002, it was San Antonio Jay.
