Kyle Lehman (7-5, 0-2) started the 2018-2019 boys basketball season better than the past few, but it couldn't pull off the home upset against Austin power Lake Travis (16-0, 2-0) on Friday night. The road Cavaliers trailed 13-12 after the first quarter and 27-24 at halftime, bounced back with its first quarter victory in the third, and pulled away in the fourth for a 57-48 25-6A win. VYPE Player of the Game Ryan Bormann led the charge with his game-high 19 points.
"I thought we came out a little slow in the beginning," said Bormann. "And then I thought at halftime, we made some changes, came out fast, and I think it was closer than we thought it should have been, but at the end we pulled it out."
Lake Travis' balanced scoring attack also set up the victory. The Cavaliers reached 21 points in the second quarter because Bormann, Bennett Mohn and Brett Baty all had seven points up to that point. They were also the only players on their team to finish in double figures. Along with Bormann's 19, Mohn added 16, and Baty finished with 15.
But, Lehman still gave them a run in the game. It started with seven consecutive Lobos' points that flipped a 10-4 deficit to a 11-10 lead in the opening quarter. Cameron Jones led the home team with 14 points, but he couldn't prevent it from falling behind by double-digits in the fourth quarter.
"It's good," Bormann said of the performance. "Always good to get another district win. They're quick, so we ended it well I thought."
