The Shadrach Show: North Shore Sophomore Wide Receiver Playing Big

HOUSTON – Buy the ticket, purchase the popcorn and get ready because Shadrach Banks is liable to put on a show.

In the Region III-6A-DI Semifinal against Katy, the sophomore wide receiver’s first three catches of the game went for touchdowns – 61 yards, 29 yards and 75 yards. Banks has three catches for 165 yards and three scores in the first half against Katy.

“No,” Banks said about knowing his first-half numbers. “I was just playing. I don’t worry about stats.”

Watching Banks run past defenders, break through tackles and pretty much do what he wanted, showed flashes of 1998 Randy Moss when he had a similar performance against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day.

What's crazy is Banks wasn't even born when Moss had three grabs for 168 yards and three scores against America's Team.

Banks’ big numbers shouldn’t come as a surprise though. North Shore quarterback Dematrius Davis, also a sophomore, and Banks have been playing together since the seventh grade making this something Davis has seen before.

“I’m used to it by now,” Davis said. “It’s exciting every time.”

Davis and Banks would connect one more time in that epic performance, giving Banks four grabs for 192 yards and the three scores.

“He made all the difference in the world. He’s a great football player,” Katy coach Gary Joseph said of Banks. “We didn’t do a good job of handling. I said before the game we’d have to tackle better, and he did a great job.”

On the season, Banks has nearly 1,000 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns to his name. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound sophomore receiver – who already has 14 offers, including ones from Alabama, Texas, USC and other top-tier programs – is hard to defender but North Shore coach Jon Kay knows he can still get even better.

“It’s frustrating defensively,” Kay said about defending a guy like Shadrach. “I’ve been on that end of it where you’ve got a guy for them and then your guy makes their guy miss. Shadrach did that. He had a great week of preparation, a great week of practice.

“I think once he learns the work ethic in the weight room he’ll be even stronger. He’s naturally powerful, he’s got big legs and he’s everything you want in a high school football player.”
