Traditional powers Newton and Daingerfield to square off

Two of the most storied programs in the state of Texas will meet tonight in Lufkin, as defending State Champion Newton faces Daingerfield in Lufkin's Abe Martin Stadium.

The Eagles (12-0) are currently riding a 27-game winning streak after pounding Troup, 69-14 last week. In the victory TCU-commit Darwin Barlow ran nine times for 135 yards and three touchdowns, while also hauling in one pass for an eight-yard score. Fellow future Horned Frog Josh Foster also had a solid night. The quarterback completed six of seven passes for 104 yards and rushed for two touchdowns.

On the other side the Tigers (9-3) had no problem in their 62-0 thumping of Corrigan-Camden. Jakobie Craver only ran the ball five times, but found the end zone three times while piling up 142 yards on the ground. Quarterback Jakauri Woods also did damage, throwing touchdowns passes of 40 and 62 yards.

Newton domination this year is remarkable. WT Johnston's team is averaging just under 58 points a game and giving up only eight points an outing. The closest game for the Eagles this season came at West Orange-Stark, a team that's still alive in the 4A-DII playoffs. Even in that game Newton was in control, winning on the soggy turf of Dan R. Hooks Stadium, 21-7.

Daingerfield started the year (4-3) before going on a five-game winning streak. The Tigers fell to Gunter (27-14), Elysian Fields (41-38) and Waskom (45-18), but have dominated since then outscoring opponents 282-64.

The two programs, that have won a combined ten State Championships, have met a total of three times with Daingerfield winning two of those. The last game came back in 2009 when the Tigers thumped Newton, 27-6 in the State Quarterfinals.
