The Port Arthur Memorial girls basketball team current season is a key example of how district wins are all that matter. After a slow start, the Lady Titans are (6-1) in 21-5A with the only loss coming against first place Barbers Hill.
Memorial is two years removed from a heartbreaking three point loss against Manvel in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs. Since the drop to 5A, the Lady Titans have failed to advance to postseason, though that drought should end now. Julia Sion has led a group of four returning starters this season after averaging 11 points and 10 rebounds a game as a junior. The senior heavy lineup is also highlighted by Dakayla Miller, Iyanna Brannon and Emily McElroy.
With a rematch with Barbers Hill still looming, a district title is still within reach.
