West Brook advances to first State Semifinal since 1982

HOUSTON - The clock struck midnight for Cinderella Cy Creek Saturday afternoon in NRG Stadium, as West Brook handled the Cougars, 31-21.

Cy Creek had a promising opening drive, only to see it end with a missed Diego Gracia field goal. After that it was all West Brook. The Bruins got on the board first with a Kevin Linares 25-yard field goal with 3:56 left in the first quarter.

The score would remain that way until the second. Facing a 4th and 5 at the Cy Creek 17 yard line, L'Ravien Elia found Deonte Simpson, who then tiptoed the sideline and reached the ball inside the pylon for the score. After the extra point, West Brook led, 10-0.

Just over six minutes later it was the Bruin defense coming up with a big play. Jay Bell stripped Eddie Jimerson, setting up a 41-yard scoop and score by linebacker Daniel Coleman. With a 17-0 lead, the Brook was in complete control.

Things got even worse for the Cougars less than two minutes later. This time the Bruins pulled out the back of tricks with Simpson finding Thaddeaus Johnson wide open for another score.

The Cougars stopped the bleeding late in the first half. Josh White caused West Brook punter Harris Downer to fumble, he would then pick up and take it to the house for Cy Creek's first points of the night.

That momentum would not carry over into the third. Instead, Elia threw a dart to Johnson for a 20-yard touchdown, giving the Bruins back their 24-point cushion. The senior finished the afternoon 13 of 27 for 151 yards and two scores.

After a Brown to Jimerson connection cut the West Brook advantage down to 31-14 in the third, the Cougars inched closer with 4:12 left in the fourth quarter. Brown found Jaden Gray, who made a remarkable catch in the end zone. All of a sudden Cy Creek had momentum.

Instead of crumbling under pressure, the Bruins defense stood strong to advance West Brook to their first State Semifinal appearance since 1982. Erick Peevey's team now awaits the winner of Austin Westlake (12-1) and San Antonio Brandeis (11-2).
