West Brook looking to bring back some 1982 magic

Back in 1982 West Brook was formed when Hebert and Forest Park high schools merged. It was a real life Remember the Titans situation. And just like TC Williams High School in Virginia, the Bruins came together to win a State Championship. Unfortunately for the Brook, the team has failed to advance past the State Quarterfinals since that inaugural varsity season. The last chance West Brook had an opportunity for a State Semifinal appearance was in 1997. That year former Florida Marlins first round draft pick Chip Ambres and the Bruins ran into a tough Alief Hastings team that sent West Brook back to Beaumont with a 39-22 loss.

On the other side of the ball, Cy Creek has already made history with their first State Quarterfinal appearance. The Cougars (8-5) continue to stun teams after entering the playoffs with a (5-5) record. In their 43-14 thrashing of Summer Creek at Rice Stadium last week, quarterback Julian Brown completed 23 of 32 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns, along with two interceptions. Running back Eddie Jimerson also had a huge night, finishing with three rushing touchdowns and 100 yards receiving with another score.

Cy Creek is making their first State Quarterfinal appearance in program history.

West Brook's Regional win wasn't nearly as easy. Katy Tompkins scored 21 unanswered points to start the night in NRG Stadium. Quarterback L'Ravien Elia and running back Robert McGrue, Jr. would take over after that. The senior signal caller would give the Bruins their first lead of the night with 11:48 left in fourth when he exploded for a 51-yard touchdown run. Elia would finish the evening with 162 yards rushing and two scores to go with 114 yards through the air. Former Built Ford Tough 6A Player of The Week McGrue piled up 248 yards on the ground and four touchdowns on eight carries.

While Cy Creek looks like a team of destiny, it appears West Brook has too many weapons for the Cougars to counter. Then again, games aren't won on paper, they're won on the gridiron.
