Different Venue, Same Result: Lake Travis Defeats Judson (video included)

Judson HC Sean McAuliffe congratulates LT WR Garrett Wilson after LT beat Judson 38-21 on December 8, 2018 in the 6A-I quarters.

SAN ANTONIO – Faced with a first and goal at the one-yard line, with two seconds left in the first half and tied at 14, Judson coach Sean McAuliffe went for the touchdown instead of a chip shot field goal. The snap was fumbled, and Judson didn’t score. Nothing went right for the Rockets after that.

Garrett Wilson had 127 receiving yards and three touchdowns, as Lake Travis beat Judson for the second straight year in the playoffs, 38-21. For the second straight year, the Rockets thought they had a defensive score in the third quarter, but just missed. Quarterback Hudson Card was sacked by DeMarvin Leal and the ball popped loose. Corey Parks scooped and headed for the end zone, but referee Greg Maxwell ruled Card’s arm was going forward, and called the pass incomplete. Instead of a 21-21 game, the Cavs kicked a field goal, and Judson never caught up.

Mike Chandler threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Shelton to cut the deficit to 24-21 with 8:53 left, but a Card touchdown pass, followed by a fumbled kickoff, and a Wilson touchdown catch, put the game out of reach, as LT scored two touchdowns in 62 seconds. Card threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns. LT advances to play North Shore in the UIL 6A Division I state semis next week in Houston.

Sincere McCormick had 109 yards rushing and a touchdown in his final game for Judson. Shelton had a pair of touchdown catches and 87 yards receiving.

It was over when: Some will argue the defensive score taken away, but, after giving up a touchdown to fall down 31-21, Judson fumbled away the ensuing kickoff. LT scored and the drama was over.

Game ball goes to: Kyle Eaves. Wilson had his usual yardage and great catches, but Judson couldn’t stop Eaves and his 121 receiving yards.

Stat of the game: 16. The loss was the 16th in a row by a San Antonio area team against Lake Travis in the playoffs, dating back to 2004, when Alamo Heights beat LT in the now-5A playoffs. That was three years before the Cavs won a state title.
