We Meet Again: Navarro Plays Cuero One More Time

Johnny Alegria (far right) was knocked out of last year's matchup with Cuero, and wants redemption on Friday night.

GERONIMO – If Navarro and Cuero were humans instead of high schools, they probably should just get married because they see each other more than anyone else. For the sixth straight year, they play in the knockout rounds, this time on Friday night at Comalander Stadium in the UIL 4A Division II state quarterfinals.

The teams have already played each other once this year in district, with Cuero winning 43-7, as the Panthers and new head coach Rod Blount were unable to stop Cuero’s dynamic player Jordan Whittington.

“Hopefully, we’ve gotten better from that game,” Blount said bluntly. “We saw some things that we were doing that were just a little off. We have tried to fix those things.”

Last year, Cuero won 38-24 in a game that changed when Panther running back Johnny Alegria was knocked out of the game with a concussion, and the run game was never able to catch up.

“It’s a little in his head, but we don’t want Johnny dwelling on it,” Blount said. “He is faster and more experienced.”

Weather will be an issue with heavy rain and wind possible. Cuero lost a game in San Antonio a few years ago in the heavy rain and cold weather. Blount hopes to use that to his team’s advantage.

“I’m sure they will go to him a lot, and try to slow him down,” he said. “He will make his plays, but we have to limit the amount of yards we give up. They have a lot of playmakers.”

Playoff series history: Cuero leads 4-1. Last playoff meeting: 12/1/17: Cuero 38, Navarro 24. At Heroes Stadium, Jordan Whittington caught a pair of second half Drew Riemenschneider touchdown passes, but was held to 87 all-purpose yards.
