Beaumont United head basketball coach David Green began his second construction project this past October with the new Timberwolves program, bringing together Ozen and Beaumont Central programs into one.
In 2002, he began the Port Arthur Memorial program from scratch with the conglomeration of Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Stephen F. Austin high schools.
Green would eventually take over at Galena Park North Shore and lead the Mustangs to the 2015 5A state title with superstar guard Kerwin Roach, who would later excel for Shaka Smart at the University of Texas at Austin.
“It was a challenge bringing multiple schools together as one,” said Green.
“You’re bringing in kids who played different styles and now you’re asking them to change into your system. As a coach you have to find the right personnel, I like up tempo basketball but you have to make adjustments to what you have.”
BU cruised through District 21-6A this season with a 13-1 record which included a season sweep over Green’s previous team North Shore. Their lone district loss came early in district play against West Brook 57-54.
The Timberwolves will be tested Tuesday night as they take on a scrappy George Ranch team (24-6, 10-4) led by senior guards Dalon Dean and Noah Thomasson.
“We will focus on what we do best,” said Green.
“Playing team defense where everyone has each others back, that we hand our hats on. You have to defend, contest shots, and help out your teammates. So far we’ve done a good job of helping each other out.”
